At Tesla’s highly anticipated Cybercab event, the spotlight was on the company’s latest innovation—the humanoid Optimus robot. In a striking display, a group of Optimus robots walked alongside Tesla’s newly unveiled Robovan, marking a bold step forward in the company’s mission to integrate advanced robotics into everyday life. The event also featured a video demonstration showcasing Optimus performing routine tasks, such as retrieving packages and watering plants, highlighting its potential as a versatile household assistant.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared his ambitious vision for the Optimus robot, quipping, “The Optimus will walk amongst you. You’ll be able to walk right up to them, and they will serve drinks.” Musk went on to emphasize the robot’s capabilities, explaining that Optimus could “do anything,” from walking your dog and babysitting children to mowing lawns and serving drinks. He revealed that the long-term price for the robot is expected to range between $20,000 and $30,000.
“This will be the biggest product ever of any kind,” Musk confidently declared.
Following the presentation, live footage captured guests interacting with the Optimus robots. Although the robots primarily waved and held cups of ice, one was seen handing out small gift bags and playing rock-paper-scissors with attendees. Another area featured a gazebo where dancing robots added an entertaining flair to the event, underscoring Tesla’s unique blend of innovation and playfulness.
This unveiling follows Musk’s introduction of a lighter and faster Gen 2 Optimus robot last year. During an April earnings call, he revealed that Optimus will start performing “useful tasks” by the end of this year, with external sales possibly beginning by the end of next year.
The Tesla Bot project, which initially debuted in 2021 with a playful introduction of a man in a robot suit, has since evolved into a serious product. In 2022, Tesla presented a working prototype, taking significant steps toward commercialization.
Musk has described Optimus as a “fundamental transformation for civilization,” making bold promises about its potential to increase global economic output by “two orders of magnitude.” With a price tag of around $20,000, Musk envisions widespread adoption of Optimus, even suggesting that it could play a key role in eliminating poverty worldwide by revolutionizing labor and productivity.
