Tesla has unveiled plans to significantly expand its robotics division with the mass production of its humanoid robot, Optimus. CEO Elon Musk announced that the company aims to produce several thousand units in 2025, scaling up to approximately 500,000 units annually by 2027.
“Humanoid robots have the potential to become the largest product category in history,” stated Musk during a recent interview at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. He emphasized the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on daily life, noting that AI will not only execute tasks as instructed but also anticipate needs beyond human consideration.
Optimus, first introduced in 2021, has evolved from initial prototypes to advanced models capable of complex tasks such as dancing, pouring drinks, and playing games. The robot stands approximately 1.7 meters tall and weighs around 56 kilograms, designed to perform “boring, repetitious, and dangerous” work, according to Musk. The company plans to deploy these robots within its own manufacturing facilities by 2025, with broader commercial availability anticipated by 2026.
Industry analysts have noted the rapid development of Tesla’s robotics program. Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu recently estimated that the humanoid robot market could reach 200,000 annual sales by 2035. However, Tesla’s production targets suggest a more aggressive timeline, indicating the company’s confidence in accelerating both development and adoption rates.
