Robot Era, a leader in intelligent robotics, recently tested its new STAR 1 humanoid robot in China’s Gobi Desert. The test showcased the robot’s ability to handle challenging, real-world environments. Two STAR 1 units were put through a running test in Yumen, Gansu, an area known for its unique red-sandstone formations.
Using advanced motion control, STAR 1 easily navigated various terrains such as mountains, deserts, and paved roads. During a 10-minute test, the robot demonstrated human-like balance by swinging its arms and adjusting its speed for different movements, reaching a top speed of 3.6 meters per second—a new record for outdoor robotic runs.
Testing robots outdoors is difficult because of uneven surfaces like slopes and rocks. STAR 1 tackles these challenges with a combination of advanced hardware and AI that controls its limbs and balance. The robot adapts its joints to different surfaces, like absorbing impacts on soft ground or tightening up for stability on hard surfaces.
STAR 1 features strong, flexible legs and feet that help it maintain stability and support AI-driven movement. The robot’s joint strength has increased significantly, making it one of the top performers globally. It can quickly switch between running, walking, and jumping depending on the terrain.
Robot Era equipped STAR 1 with advanced AI that enables it to learn new skills quickly. The robot’s movements are designed to mimic human running, making it highly efficient and stable. It can run for long periods without falling, even when wearing shoes, which is a challenge for many robots.
Robot Era also created a system that helps STAR 1 learn from simulations, reducing errors when transitioning to real-world environments. This technology improves the robot’s ability to function across diverse terrains.
In addition to the technological advancements, Robot Era announced it has secured nearly 300 million yuan (around $42 million) in funding to further its research and commercialization efforts.
